I remember a few of us in the tech industry being elated when Google TV was first dropped. We cannot tell you how much we have debated the inconvenience of our current TV industry, given the flexibility the ‘inter-web’ provides. So it was no surprise that so many of us jumped on the news that Google and DirectTV had formed a partnership, making DirectTV the fifth major television player to do so.
Google TV was first introduced to the public at the Google I/O event in May (see video below), and although it was introduced as a user led enhancement, revolutionizing TV viewing for you and I, it really is just another source of new found revenue for Google. We suspect that their passive aggressive methods of attaining ad dollars online will inevitably extend to this advertising medium as well. And oh yeah, if you don’t agree with my ‘passive aggressive’ claim above, just start ”googling’ archived comments on the search giants, posed by Internet pundits.
Thus far and in addition to DirectTV, Google has signed partnerships with Sony, Logitech, Intel, and DISH Network who is ironically a major competitor to DirectTV.
