There is no doubt that Google’s recent search change had and still does have a lot of people talking.  Google’s ‘Search Plus Your World’ was designed to further customize your search, by adding social graph information.  What has some of the social nameplates up in arms is the fact that the only social graph that seems to be getting any relevance is in the newly designed search is Google+.

There have been arguments that fall on both sides of the fence.  One school of thought is that it makes sense that a company would use it’s assets to bolster their own product and the other is that Google search has become the standard for search, in many ways, and altering it to show one social platform more favour than the other is unacceptable. As you can imagine, the folks up in arms the most are Twitter and Facebook.

The folks at Twitter and Facebook are not taking the Google search change sitting down , and to fight back, developers from both groups have launched a browser bookmarklet, called ‘Don’t Be Evil’ that bypasses some of the Search Plus Your World variables. The details on the plugin, video walkthroughs and all, can be found on a site they’ve published called Focus on the User.

It will be interesting to see how the public reacts to Twitter/Facebook stance.  Unless the two social giants use their own platforms to spread the word, their ability to reach the masses will be limited.  The Focus on the User movement, will get press and recognition from those in the industry, but to truly make a difference, the masses will need to be made aware and most of all – care.
